IN THE
1950's

THE URBAN DISTRICT lies mainly in undulating land falling from west to east and comprises the villages of Ashton-in-Makerfield, Bryn, Stubshaw Cross, Downall Green, Garswood and Pewfall. Ashton-in-Makerfield adjoins Wigan and St. Helens and many of those who find their livelihood in these industrial towns have chosen the Urban District as a convenient and pleasant place to live. The district is very accessible by road as it is intersected by the Winchester to Preston trunk road, A49, and by the Leeds to Liverpool road, A58, and it is also on the East Lancashire trunk road which connects Manchester and Liverpool. The proposed North-South Motorway will pass through the district with two points of access at Liverpool Road and Drummers Lane.
Excellent transport facilities are available. The frequent local bus services are supplemented by direct services to Wigan, Warrington, St. Helens, Leigh and Liverpool. Railway stations at Garswood and Bryn provide a direct link with Liverpool, St. Helens and Wigan.
