"Just on the Ashton border, at Bryn Gates, there used to be a district known to locals as 'Lump' or 'The Lump' and its residents were called Lumpers or Lumpmen. I regarded the Lump as meaning the terraced houses behind the Bryn Hall Hotel, on that side of the road only, and running from approximately the Mains Colliery access road up to the mini council estate around Kintbury Street." - Phil "Older generations of my family remember the Lump. In the days of trolley buses, it was common for the conductor to call "lump" when he approached Maines Lane bus stop, not the stop at Brynn Hall Hotel. We regarded the "lump' as that part of Bolton rd between houses Nos 583 (Mrs Griffiths) and Maines Lane. - Jeanette
